ARTIST STATEMENT
Does individual identity curate our environments, or do environmental variables infiltrate the idea of selfhood? Maddie Foss's work is a journey of questioning the origins of selfhood while simultaneously trying to understand identity concerning the physical world and online landscapes that influence her. It is through the navigation of these worlds that her selfhood collides with consumerism, tradition, and rituals that draws her to question power dynamics and structures.
Foss is an interdisciplinary artist who works predominantly in digital drawing, and installation. Her work is heavily influenced by online aesthetics geared towards women, which connects to my conceptual ideas on rituals and consumerism and how the work looks visually. The work is playful with bright color schemes, combinations of uncommon materials, and bizarre scenes. By merging all of these characteristics, she creates a personal hyperreality build around her identity.
Foss's hyperreality world sits in the realm of juxtaposition. The juxtaposition is between materials, dimensions, and a light-hearted yet profound reflection on selfhood that we must navigate through in physical and metaphysical scapes.
